Why is Valve ending Steam gift cards in stores?
Because of scams. Valve says scammers use gift cards from major brands like Steam to take advantage of people worldwide. Over the years it worked with retailers and police and added a scam warning to the cards. It also limited redemption to the wallet's currency and pulled cards from sale. Scammers adapted, so Valve stopped restocking stores. In its words: "We expect all retailers to be out of stock by the end of 2026."

Which Steam code currency do I need?
The currency of your Steam Wallet. Valve limits redemption to the wallet's currency. If you never had a wallet balance, Steam may ask for your address to set the currency; an existing wallet keeps its currency, whatever its balance. A USD wallet therefore needs a Steam US code.
