A gift card code usually fails for one of 4 reasons: already redeemed, wrong country or currency, not activated yet, or a mistyped character such as 0 for O. Was the code already redeemed?
Check every account you own first. Google Play shows "The code you entered has already been redeemed on a different account". It suggests signing in to the account that redeemed it, or asking family members. Apple suggests signing out of the App Store on all devices and back in, which refreshes the balance. A code you sent as a gift may already be redeemed by the recipient.
Is the code for another country or currency?
Region errors are the most common failure for cards bought abroad. Apple cards redeem only in their country of purchase. Google Play needs the same country and a payment profile in the card's currency. Steam limits redemption to your wallet's currency. Compare your account with the card's country on its product page, or in the region-lock table. Our guide on cards from another country explains each rule.
Is the code activated yet?
Activation can lag behind delivery. Steam says activation by the retailer may take several hours after purchase, and to contact Steam Support if the issue persists. Google Play says some cards must be activated by the seller, which Google cannot do. Apple says a card might not be activated by the retailer who sold it. Wait a few hours, then contact the seller with your order reference.
Did you mistype a character?
Many codes fail on look-alike characters. Steam lists 0 versus Q, O or D; 1 versus I; B versus 8; and G versus 6. Apple lists B/8, D/O, E/3, G/6, O/Q, O/0, S/5, U/V and Z/2. On Apple cards, use the code that starts with X, not the serial number. Type the code by hand rather than pasting it with a hidden space.

Why does my Steam code say it is invalid?
Usually a mistyped character or a code for another currency. Steam lists 0/O/Q/D, 1/I, B/8 and G/6 as common mix-ups, and redeems codes only in your wallet's currency. See our Steam Wallet guide.
Why does my Apple gift card not redeem?

Can I get a refund for a code that does not work?
