Which Steam card should I buy?

Buy the card in the recipient's Steam Wallet currency: USD for a US wallet, EUR for a euro wallet, GBP for a UK wallet, BRL for a Brazilian wallet. Wallet codes and CD keys cannot change a Steam store country. Steam holds the balance in your Steam Wallet currency, set from your address the first time you add funds; the redeem page says codes convert to that currency, but Valve also lists limiting redemption to the wallet's currency as an anti-scam measure, so buy the card in the wallet's currency.

What did Valve change about retail Steam gift cards?

Valve’s current official Wallet FAQ says the retail gift-card programme is ending, retailers will not receive replenishment, and retail cards are expected to run out by the end of 2026.

Does USD guarantee a code will work on every Steam account?

No. For a USD listing, check that the intended account’s Wallet is actually denominated in USD before using the code. Account language and where a person is temporarily travelling are not substitutes for that check. The direct Steam Digital Gift Card service sends value between Steam friends and is a separate product.

Do existing Steam cards expire when the retail programme ends?

Valve states that existing physical gift cards remain usable whenever holders choose, subject to local laws. The announcement therefore does not say that every remaining physical card stops working at the end of 2026. The end-of-2026 stock expectation concerns retailers running out of cards, while the continued-use statement concerns legitimate physical cards already acquired.

A remembered US$20 retail card or a friend-gift selection is insufficient to create an offered wallet-code amount here. If an actual card is later made available, its exact amount, USD compatibility and format need to be established together.

How do activation and account ownership affect redemption?

For a legitimate code already owned, sign into the intended account on Steam’s official Redeem a Steam Gift Card or Wallet Code page, enter the code and continue. Valve notes that retail activation can take several hours after purchase; an activation problem should be taken to the retailer rather than treated as a reason to try unrelated accounts. Once funds are credited, Steam says Wallet funds cannot be moved or gifted to another Steam account. Verify the recipient before redemption and preserve the original receipt and exact error privately if assistance is needed.

Ask the recipient whether they want spending flexibility or one specific title. For a title, keep the exact store link and check which edition or add-on they mean. A digital balance is not a guarantee that every edition, add-on or device configuration fits their plan.
