Validity

US and UK Starbucks Cards and their balances have no expiry date and no activation, service or dormancy fees; the German terms set no card expiry and refer to statutory limitation periods.

How to redeem

  1. Use the genuine card or eGift at a participating Starbucks store; the location must actually accept Starbucks Card payment. A Starbucks sign alone is insufficient.
  2. For an eGift, the agreement describes printing it for store payment or adding/transferring it to an existing Starbucks Card/account. Reprinting the same email does not create another balance.

Which Starbucks card should I buy?

Buy the card of the country where it will be spent. A US card also works in Canada, the UK, Ireland, Mexico and Australia; the German card works only in participating AmRest Coffee Houses in Germany. Value on a Starbucks Card stays in the currency of the country where it was sold; when a US or UK card is used abroad, Starbucks converts the spend without charging a conversion fee.

Treat a Card as prepaid money, not a drink plan

The US agreement describes loaded value as prepayment for goods and services at participating Starbucks locations. It is a monetary contribution, rather than a subscription or a promise of a particular number of drinks. A hypothetical USD 25 balance paying an eligible USD 7 purchase would leave USD 18. That example explains a remaining balance; it neither quotes a menu price nor proves USD 25 is a current gift button. Prices, customisations and store participation still affect what a recipient can actually buy with the money.

Keep four different dollar figures in their proper roles

The Card agreement says its minimum load is typically USD 5 and may change. It separately caps the stored balance at USD 500, one Card’s daily activity at USD 2,000 and combined new-card purchases and loads at USD 10,000 per day. Activity can include movements of funds that differ from the amount held at one moment. A sender should identify the actual offered value rather than turning every printed operational limit into a denomination.

Ask whether the particular location accepts the Card

Most North American Starbucks locations, including Puerto Rico, are described as accepting the Card, but some branded airport, grocery and bookstore locations and stores in Guam may not. The agreement directs users to ask the store or use the locator, identifying Digital Rewards as an acceptance amenity. A familiar sign therefore does not guarantee a particular payment setup. Before relying on a gift for a travel stop, verify that chosen location’s Card acceptance. That is more useful than assuming that a national chain name makes every licensed counter identical.

US-issued Cards have a named international list

The US terms expressly include Canada, England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland, Mexico and Australia for cards purchased in the United States. This permission is specific to the described issue and participating locations. Foreign spending is converted to the original sale-country base currency at transaction-date rates, while a receipt may show local currency. No Card conversion fee is charged, although an outside bank can charge for loading abroad.

An eGift printout and an app balance are not extra money

The electronic programme creates one unique Card number for an eGift. The recipient can use the supported store presentation, add it to an account or transfer its balance to an existing Card as described in the agreement. Printing the same email repeatedly does not create several funded gifts. Likewise, putting the Card into an app is another way to access the programme, rather than an additional award equal to its value. Retain and protect the original credential, particularly if a recipient plans to use it over several smaller visits.

No expiration is different from the life of a reward

It also excludes activation, service, dormancy and inactivity fees. These are Card clauses, not a promise that loyalty Stars or a promotional benefit will last forever. Registration brings separate Rewards terms into the relationship. A recipient should keep the monetary balance and any earned reward in separate mental accounts: a reward changing or expiring does not by itself establish that the prepaid Card money disappeared, while holding the Card does not reserve a promotional offer.

Eligibility and registration carry their own conditions

The Card programme is not intended for children under 13. People aged 13–18 may use it only under the supervision of a parent or legal guardian who accepts the agreement. Registration also creates duties to keep information accurate and protect the credential. The agreement treats possession of the Card details as important because someone else may be able to spend them. Neither a monetary amount nor the ability to display a barcode proves that a recipient meets the relevant account and programme conditions. Give the intended user the genuine terms along with the gift.

Distinguish an unused eGift refund from general cash-out

Loaded value is generally nonrefundable and cannot be redeemed for cash unless law or the agreement permits it. The eGift clause separately allows refunds of unused eGifts with the original receipt. A merchandise bundle can also include a retail component beyond its loaded value, so the bundle’s purchase price need not equal Card credit. Business use has separate resale and customer-solicitation restrictions. These distinctions prevent a general programme description from becoming a promise about any reseller’s price, authority or refund entitlement. Retain the appropriate receipt and identify which transaction needs attention.

More questions about this card

Does the USD 500 ceiling prove a USD 5–500 gift menu?

No. The agreement’s typical minimum load and stored-balance ceiling are operational constraints, not a read purchase menu or confirmed sale increment.

Does the Card balance expire with loyalty Stars?

The US Card agreement explicitly says the Card and its value do not expire. Rewards and promotional benefits have separate terms.

Can I print an eGift several times?

Copies still refer to one unique Card number and balance. Reprinting does not create additional money or independent gifts.
