How to redeem
- Use the genuine card or eGift at a participating Starbucks store; the location must actually accept Starbucks Card payment. A Starbucks sign alone is insufficient.
- For an eGift, the agreement describes printing it for store payment or adding/transferring it to an existing Starbucks Card/account. Reprinting the same email does not create another balance.
Which Starbucks card should I buy?
Buy the card of the country where it will be spent. A US card also works in Canada, the UK, Ireland, Mexico and Australia; the German card works only in participating AmRest Coffee Houses in Germany. Value on a Starbucks Card stays in the currency of the country where it was sold; when a US or UK card is used abroad, Starbucks converts the spend without charging a conversion fee.
This existing market entry is labelled CAD. The national Card agreement explains that loaded money is held in the currency of the country where the Card was sold. That makes identifying the actual issue important: a dollar sign alone does not distinguish Canadian credit from US credit. A Canadian recipient should confirm the original programme and stated value before treating a gift as part of a local purchase budget. The gift is prepaid monetary value, not a membership term, a drink subscription or an award of loyalty Stars.
Read the dollar limits without inventing a CAD menu
The Canadian page prints a 500-dollar balance ceiling, a 2,000-dollar daily activity figure for one Card and a 10,000-dollar aggregate daily purchase/load limit. Its minimum load is qualified as typically five dollars and subject to change. The same text says website transactions are US dollars. These statements are retained with their scopes instead of being presented as a current CAD gift selector.
The currently served document retains older references
It mentions older ways of sending gifts and a former online store route. Use the documented Card concepts without depending on an obsolete shopping link or assuming that a historical social feature is available now. The dated agreement is also not silently replaced with the newer US wording: its national publication and the questions it leaves unanswered remain visible.
A North American description is not a complete foreign-use list
The national terms describe most participating North American locations and identify exceptions among some licensed or branded stores. For a particular visit, ask about Card acceptance or consult the official location information rather than relying on the shop sign. The international country list appearing in the Canadian agreement explicitly speaks about Cards purchased in the United States. It therefore does not independently prove that a Canadian-issued gift has the same list of permitted foreign destinations.
Keep the base currency and a local receipt distinct
The agreement explains that a Card retains its country-of-sale base currency even when a transaction is shown locally in another currency. It also describes transaction-date currency conversion and no conversion charge against the Card, while allowing an external payment provider to charge for loading abroad. None of this establishes a current exchange rate. For an ordinary hypothetical Canadian-currency calculation, CAD 45 less a CAD 16 eligible purchase leaves CAD 29. That arithmetic assumes both values are CAD; a US-dollar receipt cannot be substituted without addressing the conversion.
One electronic gift still has one underlying balance
The eGift terms describe a unique Card number, printing for store presentation and adding funds to an existing Card. Those are ways to use the same contribution. Printing another copy or showing the credential through an app does not multiply it. Retain the genuine details after a partial purchase and keep them away from anyone who should not spend the money. The national agreement also distinguishes registered-card protection and liability conditions from the mere possession of a barcode. No third-party listing proves an individual gift’s activation or unused amount.
Monetary validity is not a loyalty expiry calculation
The Canadian Card clause expressly says neither the Card nor its balance expires. Activation, service, dormancy and inactivity fees are excluded. This is separate from the Rewards agreement that becomes relevant when a Card is registered. A recipient should consequently avoid applying a Stars deadline to the underlying money or assuming that every promotion has the Card’s validity. The Card agreement also states that the programme is not intended for under-13s and that users aged 13–18 require parental or guardian supervision. These are programme conditions, not denomination rules.
Keep the receipt for the right kind of refund request
The agreement generally treats loaded value as nonrefundable and non-cash, subject to its legal and contractual exceptions. It separately permits refunds for unused eGifts with the original receipt. A Card packaged with merchandise may include an additional retail price, so the amount paid for a bundle is not necessarily its stored value. Business use is directed to separate restrictions, including resale. Before relying on a remedy, identify whether the question concerns an unused electronic gift, merchandise or a payment problem.
