How to redeem
- Use the purchased US card at a participating US IKEA location or the IKEA.us payment step for eligible goods and services.
- Supply the card’s actual redemption details; a legacy physical card requires its four-digit PIN for online use and a card without a PIN is store-only.
- Pay any excess using an accepted method and retain the remaining card details for later eligible purchases.
Which IKEA card should I buy?
Buy the card of the country where the recipient shops at IKEA, in that country's currency. German, Austrian, French, US and Australian cards only work in their own country. The balance is held in the issuing country's currency; where another IKEA country accepts the card, it converts the balance (IKEA Spain charges a 3% fee on non-euro cards, IKEA Australia applies a weekly rate).
IKEA’s US purchase guidance permits five to one thousand dollars on a card. The public information page also describes that interval, while its buying link leads to a separately operated Frizbee storefront. It would therefore be unsupported to turn the minimum and maximum into a selectable five-dollar ladder or assume every whole-dollar figure is offered. Keep the distinction when planning a wedding or college gift. A budget falling inside the stated limits still requires an exact product offer. Examples from an old promotional giveaway do not substitute for the current purchased-card menu.
The US programme provides domestic spending rather than global store credit
The national terms identify participating IKEA stores in the United States and the US website as redemption channels. A traveller should not assume that the card becomes usable in Canada because both countries display a dollar symbol. Likewise, a familiar IKEA logo on an overseas store does not override the issuing programme’s permitted locations. Establish the recipient’s intended shopping country before choosing US credit. For someone furnishing an American apartment, the relevant question is whether their planned purchase uses the US business and an accepted local channel. The same furniture design appearing in another national catalogue does not make its payment arrangements interchangeable.
Ordinary gifts, merchandise returns and promotional awards are separate
The US card agreement covers purchased physical and digital Gift Cards, Merchandise Return Cards and Promotional Cards, while giving each format a different origin. Return cards arise from specified product-return situations; promotional cards arise from loyalty, reward or marketing programmes. An ordinary purchased digital gift is the format considered here. The issuer says purchased gifts and return credit do not expire, whereas an individual promotion can impose a deadline and further spending restrictions. Do not use a photograph of a promotional card to establish the policy of a purchased gift, or treat returned-merchandise credit from an unknown source as authorised retail supply.
No-expiry value has an unclaimed-property qualification in the terms
The US conditions give ordinary purchased gift cards no expiration and no inactivity or service fees. They separately discuss circumstances in which state unclaimed-property requirements can transfer an unused balance to a state. If that occurs, the issuer may be released from its obligation and recovery may require contacting the state’s administrator. This is not a fixed national expiration date or a monthly dormancy charge. It is a specific qualification to the general no-expiry finding. Retain the purchase record and card details when putting a gift aside for a long time. Do not assume that a card being old proves it has expired or that every unused balance automatically follows the same state process.
Check service eligibility before funding an entire home project
US card value can cover merchandise, selected IKEA services, food and beverages. The agreement specifically cautions that IKEA Kitchen Services or third-party services, with Taskrabbit as an example, may not accept it. A recipient buying a cabinet and arranging installation should therefore distinguish the furniture checkout from the installer’s charge. Identify the actual supplier and payment screen for each component of the project before selecting prepaid value. This also avoids confusing a furniture shopping contribution with a broadly accepted service-payment account.
A smaller balance can contribute, but the card cannot be reloaded
The terms permit a larger eligible purchase if the customer pays the excess at checkout. They also state that cards cannot receive additional loaded value. For example, an existing card can contribute toward a more expensive item without becoming a new higher-value card simply because the customer supplies the difference. Keep the remaining balance information when an earlier purchase uses only part of the credit. Plan around the actual card and the accepted supplementary payment choice rather than assuming a reloadable wallet.
Older physical cards can require a different redemption route
IKEA’s US help says a physical card needs its four-digit PIN for online payment. A legacy card without that PIN is usable only at store locations. The absence of online credentials is therefore a format limitation, not an expiry finding. Keep a clear, readable record of the code supplied with a digital purchase as well. The national terms do not promise replacement of lost, damaged or stolen card value, making preservation of the usable credentials practical.
The issuer’s limits and authorised-source rule remain independent
US terms cap an individual card at one thousand dollars and total card value purchased or obtained in one day at ten thousand dollars. Those are issuer acquisition limits; they do not enlarge this service’s separate order allowance or establish any present stock. The same agreement requires an IKEA or authorised third-party origin and prohibits selling or bartering cards, while permitting a gift transferred without payment. Use the documented national rules to assess suitability, then require an actual authorised offer for the precise amount and format before treating the card as obtainable here.
