Which IKEA card should I buy?

Buy the card of the country where the recipient shops at IKEA, in that country's currency. German, Austrian, French, US and Australian cards only work in their own country. The balance is held in the issuing country's currency; where another IKEA country accepts the card, it converts the balance (IKEA Spain charges a 3% fee on non-euro cards, IKEA Australia applies a weekly rate).

Five sterling buttons include thirty pounds, rather than twenty-five

The current British digital personalisation page names ten, thirty, fifty, one hundred and two hundred pounds. That thirty-pound choice is worth retaining precisely: the German euro menu includes twenty-five, but a foreign preset does not create a twenty-five-pound UK button. A separate Custom amount option and the published one-to-two-hundred-and-fifty-pound limits describe another purchasing route. Someone planning a smaller thank-you gift can compare the named ten- and thirty-pound choices without interpreting every intervening figure as a documented preset. The issuer menu also limits its digital gift bag to three cards, a separate rule from any seller’s order arrangement.

The issue-date boundary changed what the no-expiry promise means

IKEA now separates UK cards issued from 6 October 2025 from cards issued before that date. Current terms give the newer cards five years of validity measured from purchase, after which remaining value is lost. Earlier cards retain a separately published no-expiry regime. A statement that every British IKEA gift lasts forever would therefore misdescribe a newly issued card. The date boundary identifies the relevant terms; the later date on which someone finally opens the gift email does not itself select a different regime.

Purchase and refund-card receipt are different timing events

The newer conditions use the purchase date for an ordinary Gift Card and the receipt date for a Refund Card. This distinction matters if a household has both a birthday present and credit from returning furniture. Calling both amounts IKEA credit does not make their origin or timing anchor identical. Keep the card record associated with each transaction and inspect the actual deadline before planning later spending. Do not calculate five fresh years for an ordinary gift merely because a sender forwards it to another email address.

The UK terms name seventeen destinations with specific exclusions

The current list covers the United Kingdom, Belgium, Canada, the Czech Republic, Croatia, Denmark, Finland, Hungary, Italy, Ireland, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland. Spain has express island exclusions, including Ibiza, the Balearic Islands, Lanzarote, Tenerife, Mallorca and Gran Canaria. The issuer reserves the ability to change that list. France, Germany, Australia and the United States are not named in this UK list, so a guide should not promise use there. Cross-border acceptance is a property of the issuing terms, rather than a consequence of a retailer sharing the IKEA brand or stocking the same product.

The named destinations include markets using currencies other than sterling. Their inclusion establishes the published acceptance scope, but the observed UK terms do not provide an exchange-rate formula or a conversion-fee schedule for a specific destination. Do not convert a hundred-pound gift into a guaranteed euro shopping amount using an unrelated website’s display rate. It is also unsafe to assume reciprocity: a foreign card’s own terms govern whether it can travel back to Britain. Keep the original currency and the recipient’s intended purchase country visible while assessing the gift.

A payment reservation can explain a temporarily reduced balance

IKEA’s British balance help says funds are reserved as soon as a gift or refund card is added to an online shopping cart, even if checkout is not completed. The reserved value can take up to one hour to return. A suddenly lower balance can therefore require checking an unfinished order before assuming the code was stolen or expired. Preserve the order information and use the appropriate issuer support route if the reservation does not resolve as described. The help also distinguishes the nineteen-digit number with four-digit PIN from a sixteen-character redemption code. Use the credentials supplied for that exact card instead of forcing one format into another.

The gift can contribute to a larger purchase without becoming cash

The UK conditions permit part payment when the goods cost more than the available card balance. The remainder can be paid by an accepted method, with cash supplementation limited to in-store use. Cards cannot be reloaded, exchanged for cash or used to buy another card, subject to applicable law. A fifty-pound gift is consequently a useful contribution toward a larger furnishing purchase without becoming a general cash account. Check the actual total and remaining balance before arranging the shopping trip. No inactivity or service fee applies under these terms, but that fee finding does not cancel the newer card’s five-year deadline.

A published issuer menu is not permission for this service to resell

The national agreement prohibits sale or barter of a card and permits passing it to somebody without payment, such as as a present. It also explains that purchases through third parties can involve the seller’s additional purchasing conditions. Keep those unresolved facts separate from the card’s documented use. The recipient can receive emailed details and a QR code, and the issuer page supports printable or wallet-accessible presentation, but those format features are not a delivery promise from this service. Require an actual authorised supply arrangement for the intended product.
