Which Google Play card should I buy?

Buy the card for the country set in the recipient's Google Play account, in that country's currency (USD for the US and Puerto Rico, GBP for the UK, EUR for Germany or France). Changing Play country requires living there and a local payment method. Google Play balance is held in the currency of the account's Play country, and a card bought for another country and currency cannot be redeemed there or converted.

Five current yen presets and two withdrawn values

Google’s current table identifies ¥1,000, ¥3,000, ¥5,000, ¥10,000, ¥20,000 as Japan’s fixed choices. It separately calls out ¥1,500 and ¥15,000 as no longer available for new purchase since 19 September 2023. That date is a product-history distinction, rather than an expiry date for earlier purchased cards. A comparison should therefore separate a current fixed preset from an older genuine card already acquired before the change. Keep the acquisition date and the exact amount when assessing an older Japanese gift.

The same official table publishes a variable interval from ¥1,000 to ¥50,000. It does not say that every whole yen, every hundred yen or every thousand yen is an allowed selectable amount.

Japanese residence and the local account define the recipient

The Japanese gift-card and prepaid-credit terms require residence in Japan and a minimum age of thirteen. They also require internet access and a Google Payments account. For users below eighteen, the stated Payments enrolment is limited to using cards or credits for eligible content. Confirm that the intended recipient satisfies the national conditions before giving a yen code. A traveller visiting Tokyo, a device set to Japanese or someone studying the language does not by itself establish a Japanese account relationship. Google’s general help keeps card use tied to the purchase country and currency, so the account position matters before the first redemption attempt.

The Japanese terms name eligible Play and YouTube content

Japan’s local text expressly allows the balance for eligible content on Google Play and YouTube. This is a useful national detail, but it should not be rewritten as permission to buy every YouTube service or every Google-branded item. The same terms exclude certain hardware and subscription services. Someone giving the card for a named purchase should inspect that purchase’s Japanese payment options and its final price. The yen balance can be applied in whole or in part toward eligible content under the terms. That description concerns how credit is spent; it does not specify how many months a subscription or how many in-game items a preset will buy.

Older ¥1,500 and ¥15,000 gifts are not automatically worthless

The official help notice says cards at the two withdrawn values purchased before the September 2023 change can continue to be redeemed, with no expiration of the resulting Play balance. A holder should therefore identify when the legitimate card was obtained instead of assuming the sales cutoff invalidated it. Preserve the original purchase information if help is needed. The correct conclusion from the notice is continued use for the specified earlier cards, rather than continued issuance of those values.

Section three of the Japanese conditions states that gift cards and the specified prepaid credits have no fees or expiration. Keep promotional benefits and unrelated coupons separate because their terms may differ. A no-expiry rule gives time to choose eligible content; it does not guarantee that an app remains listed forever or that a remembered product price stays the same.

Account balance should stay with its intended Japanese holder

The Japanese conditions restrict exchanging or transferring cards for value except where law requires otherwise, and distinguish Play balance from non-Play funds held through Payments. A sender should therefore plan the gift around the person who will redeem and use it, rather than treating it as a transferable cash balance after claiming it. Google’s general guidance also says redeemed credit does not move to the new country when Play country changes. Before a recipient relocates, ask where the remaining yen will be used. The fact that a card has no expiry does not solve a mismatched account or provide a currency exchange when circumstances change.

Review yen credit and purchase eligibility as separate steps

Use Google’s official redemption flow and check the receiving account before its final confirmation. Once value has been added, inspect the resulting JPY balance. If the code was accepted but the intended subscription is refused, investigate the item and billing eligibility rather than repeatedly trying the same redeemed code. If an older ¥1,500 or ¥15,000 card itself is rejected, preserve its purchase date and the exact error for the appropriate support review. Those details address different questions.
