USDT TRC-20 fees in October 2026: what a transfer costs, and when ERC-20 is cheaper

Last updated: · 6 min read

Quick answer

The USDT TRC-20 fee is typically about 6.43 TRX (about US$2.14) per transfer from a wallet without staked energy, vs about US$0.02 in ETH gas on ERC-20 (checked 21 Oct 2026). With enough staked or delegated energy, the TRC-20 fee drops to 0–0.345 TRX. Exchanges charged 1–1.5 USDT on TRC-20 and 0.46–0.74 USDT on ERC-20. Gifts With Crypto accepts both networks at face value, no KYC up to US$1,000.

How is a USDT TRC-20 fee calculated?

A USDT TRC-20 fee is energy plus bandwidth, priced in TRX. Energy pays for running the USDT contract; bandwidth pays for the bytes of the transaction. On 21 Oct 2026, TronGrid's chain parameters priced missing energy at 100 sun per unit and missing bandwidth at 1,000 sun per byte. One TRX is 1,000,000 sun.

We read the receipts of 22 confirmed USDT transfers at 18:29 UTC. A plain transfer used 64,285 energy and 345 bytes of bandwidth. Without staked energy, that burns 64,285 × 100 = 6,428,500 sun, or 6.4285 TRX. Every activated account gets 600 free bandwidth, refilled over 24 hours, so the 345 bytes are usually free for one transfer a day.

If the recipient holds no USDT, the contract creates a new balance entry and energy rises to 130,285: 13.0285 TRX, about US$4.33.

Why does USDT on Tron need so much energy?

Most of it is a penalty for popularity. Tron's Dynamic Energy Model raises the energy cost of heavily used contracts, up to 3.4 times the base cost on mainnet. In our receipts, a USDT transfer's base cost was 14,650 energy and the penalty 49,635, about 3.39 times the base. USDT sits close to the maximum.

The TRX price then sets the dollar cost. At US$0.33268 per TRX, 6.4285 TRX came to US$2.14.

How can I lower my USDT TRC-20 fee?

  • Stake TRX for energy. With 18.53 billion TRX staked network-wide for 180 billion daily energy, one transfer a day needed about 6,620 TRX staked (about US$2,200). Energy refills over 24 hours.
  • Receive delegated energy. Another account can delegate its staked energy to yours; the transfer then burns 0–0.345 TRX.
  • Withdraw from an exchange. Kraken charged a flat 1 USDT, Binance and OKX 1.5 USDT, below the 6.43 TRX of an unstaked wallet.
  • Switch to ERC-20. At 0.135 gwei, Ethereum gas cost about US$0.02. Pay with USDT ERC-20 instead.

Is TRC-20 always more expensive than ERC-20?

No. The two costs move for different reasons. The TRC-20 cost in TRX is set by chain parameters, so it moves mainly with the TRX price. The ERC-20 cost moves with gas. At 65,000 gas and US$2,516.28 per ETH, ERC-20 would match the US$2.14 TRC-20 fee only at about 13 gwei. That is roughly 100 times the 0.135 gwei of 21 Oct 2026. USDT TRC-20 fee questions

How much is the USDT TRC-20 fee?

On 21 Oct 2026, a USDT TRC-20 transfer burned 6.4285 TRX (about US$2.14) from a wallet without staked energy. Sending to an address holding no USDT cost 13.0285 TRX (US$4.33). With staked energy it cost 0–0.345 TRX. Exchanges charged 1–1.5 USDT.

Why is the USDT TRC-20 fee higher than ERC-20 now?

Ethereum gas was very low, at 0.135 gwei, so an ERC-20 transfer cost about US$0.02. Tron prices energy at 100 sun per unit. USDT also carries a Dynamic Energy Model penalty close to the 3.4× maximum, so a transfer needs 64,285 energy.

How much TRX do I need to send USDT TRC-20?

About 7 TRX if the recipient already holds USDT, or about 14 TRX if it does not, when your wallet has no staked energy. If energy runs out, the transfer fails with OUT_OF_ENERGY and the TRX already burned is not returned.

Is the TRC-20 fee charged in USDT?

Not on-chain: Tron burns TRX for energy and bandwidth, so a wallet holding only USDT cannot send it. Exchanges are different; they charge a flat fee in USDT, such as 1 USDT at Kraken or 1.5 USDT at Binance and OKX.

Which exchange has the least expensive USDT TRC-20 withdrawal?

Kraken, at 1 USDT with a 6 USDT minimum on 21 Oct 2026. Binance charged 1.5 USDT (minimum 5) and OKX 1.5 USDT (minimum 10). On ERC-20, OKX was least expensive at 0.46 USDT.

Does Gifts With Crypto charge a fee for USDT payments?

No. Cards are sold at face value with 0% markup, and both USDT TRC-20 and ERC-20 are accepted. The only extra cost is your network or exchange fee. See pricing.

Pay with the cheaper USDT network

Both USDT routes are accepted at face value, no KYC up to US$1,000.
