Does an H&M gift card keep its leftover balance?

Yes, the balance stays on the card, not on your H&M account. You can pay for the full value of an item or only part of it. Every receipt shows the current balance of the cards used.

You can also check the balance online at hm.com, in an H&M or H&M HOME store, or through Customer Service. Physical cards can be topped up in any H&M store in the country where they were bought.

Mind the zero-balance rule. A UK card that sits at zero for three months becomes invalid and cannot be reactivated. In the US, the same happens after 90 days at zero.

Can I spend an H&M gift card in another country?

No, with one North American exception. H&M UK's terms limit cards to H&M stores, H&M Home stores and hm.com in the country of purchase. A German card therefore stays in Germany, and a French card in France.

US cards are redeemable in H&M stores in both the United States and Canada. Online, though, they only work on the US website and app. Canadian cards follow the mirror rule: stores in Canada, the US and Puerto Rico, but online only on the Canadian site.

What if my H&M code does not work?

Check the PIN source first: physical cards print it on the back, e-gift cards show it above the barcode. Then confirm you are on the hm.com site of the card's country.

Next, check the dates. UK cards expire two years after the last activation or purchase. A card left at a zero balance too long is also void, even after a later top-up attempt. Lost or stolen activated cards are not H&M's liability, so treat the code as cash.
