Which Amazon card should I buy?

Buy the card for the Amazon store the recipient actually shops on, in that store's currency: Amazon.com in USD, Amazon.co.uk in GBP, Amazon.de or Amazon.fr in EUR. A redeemed balance can never move to another country's store. An Amazon gift card loads as gift card balance in the issuing store's own currency, and that balance cannot be moved or converted to an Amazon store in another country.

Amazon France’s buying guide places electronic, physical and home-print gift cards within a published €0.10–1000 span. That is useful information about the family described by the article. It does not show a current ordering screen, identify every card configuration or establish the increment accepted by a custom field. The French article offers three ways of presenting a gift: an electronic message, a physical card and something printed at home. These forms need different handling even when they express the same currency. For an electronic gift the article describes following the email or text link; for a physical claim code it describes entering the code in the account’s gift-card area.

French marketplace credit has a defined destination

The relevant Amazon Pay help links an Amazon.fr gift card to eligible purchases on its corresponding Amazon site. It also excludes Amazon gift cards from paying for outside merchants’ orders through Amazon Pay. The shared euro symbol does not erase that distinction. A French card should not be selected for an Italian shopping account merely because both catalogues show EUR. Check the named marketplace and the intended purchase, then obtain any additional account conditions attached to the actual card before applying its value.

The two French expiry statements disagree

The dedicated French usage guide says gift-card funds remain valid for up to ten years from issuance. A separate corporate holiday article describes gift cards without an expiration date. The issuance wording also matters: neither opening the email nor adding its value to an account is established as restarting a ten-year period. For a gift intended to be stored, obtain the exact card’s terms and issuance information rather than choosing the more generous summary.

Separate account credit from the total of an order

Amazon’s French guide explains that unused funds remain available for later eligible purchases and another payment method covers a shortfall. Imagine an account with €35 of eligible gift value and an order totalling €48. The arithmetic leaves €13 to fund separately; the example does not claim that any named product currently costs that amount. The range’s €1000 upper endpoint is also not a documented maximum account balance. Card value, remaining account credit and a purchase total answer different questions. Reviewing all three prevents a gift budget from becoming a mistaken assumption about the recipient’s payment capacity.

Decide whether to spend or preserve the balance

The French guide describes checking gift-card value through the account area on desktop and through the app’s payment-related account controls. It also explains that balance use can be deselected at checkout when the holder wants to save it. This is relevant when someone shares a device or has several purchases planned: being signed into the intended account matters before confirming where a gift is applied. Read the order’s payment breakdown rather than assuming that the presence of credit means it must all be spent immediately.

A return needs its own documented treatment

A retained gift-card balance is therefore different from an established right to receive money back. Someone returning an item bought with mixed payments should inspect the actual order’s return terms rather than infer a split from the original checkout arithmetic. The same caution applies to promotional credit: an amount awarded by a campaign can carry conditions outside the ordinary paid gift-card description.

Use the dated guide without treating it as a stock feed

A retail access block supplied no usable current menu, so old indexed prices cannot fill that gap. It establishes neither a supplier’s current quantity nor permission for commercial redistribution. A dated explanation supports verification; it does not replace that product match.
