## How are gift cards region-locked?

Issuers use four kinds of rule:

- **Country of purchase.** Apple and PlayStation tie a card to the country it was issued for. A French Apple card does not work in the US App Store.
- **Account country and currency.** Google Play and Xbox check that the card's country and currency fit the account.
- **Wallet or billing currency.** Steam checks the wallet's currency; Netflix checks the currency of your bill, wherever the card was bought.
- **National store or site.** Amazon, IKEA, Nike, Zalando and most retailers accept a card only on the site or in the stores of its country.

A shared currency is not enough on its own: a French euro card is still a French card.

## How do I pick the right card with this table?

Find the brand, read its rule, then check the country and currency of the account that will redeem the code. **Methodology.** Each matrix row gives the issuer rule that decides where a gift card code can be redeemed, for one brand and one country. It cites the official issuer page and the date it was checked. We use issuer pages only: help centres, card terms and gift card pages, never resellers or forums. Country rows quote national terms; brand rows carry a rule the issuer states for all its countries. The table above shows one rule per brand for our 45 most-requested brands, preferring the US card. Rules change: re-check the source before you rely on a row.

## Region-lock questions

### Which gift cards work in any country?

Few do. Roblox says all Roblox codes can be redeemed worldwide, with the value converted to the account's currency. GetYourGuide cards work for any destination on its platform. Most other brands lock codes by country, currency or national site.

### Does a euro gift card work in every euro country?

Usually not. Apple, PlayStation, Amazon and most retailers lock by country or site, so a French card is for France. Check the brand's rule in the table above.

### Does paying in crypto change where a card works?

### Why does Netflix use currency instead of country?
